September 2, 2020

Dear Grants-Cibola County Schools Parents and Caregivers,

We are now in the fourth week of school with your children learning on-line. Most students are doing very well, some are having difficulties, and there are some who continue to have challenges with getting or staying connected with their teachers.

We will always take a close look at all of the current information and guidance before making any changes from the virtual on-line mode of instruction to any type hybrid model. The GCCS Reentry Plan remains in place, and we have made necessary adjustments as we move through the days and weeks. We have all learned very early on that some students were not handling being on the computer screen all day long. This was also causing undue stress for the families. Teachers have since made changes based on feedback, and principals have made schedule changes to help alleviate some of the stresses related to the online demands.

Some of the Chromebooks that the district ordered quite a while back did not arrive yet. In the meantime, we have checked out hundreds of laptops and desktops that we had available from the schools. Once the new Chromebooks arrive we will exchange the devices so that eventually all of the students will have their own Chromebook for school use. In any case, EVERY GCCS student should have a Chromebook, Laptop, or Desktop computer at this time.

We have been and will continue collecting information on internet access. Many homes are have reliable internet and others do not. And, there are those that live in areas where wifi is non-existent. Some students may have to continue receiving their schoolwork through learning packets being prepared each week at the school. In any case, we must be sure that every child is connected to the classroom every school day.

We know that having the students in the classroom with the teacher, in-person, is the best. However, that is not our reality right now. We will continue to strive toward this as we move forward in the safest and most appropriate ways we can find. Your child’s safety and learning are what we hold in the highest regard each and every day in our mission.

We appreciate the support of the families and community in these challenging times. We miss having your child at school and working in the classroom. We look forward to making the best of every day as we get there.
